So this week's class is based on the theme of Satya, or truthfulness.
This is one of Patanjali's Yamas from the Yoga Sutras. The Yamas are ethical guidances that can help us build a happier, or more authentic relationship with ourselves, others and the world around us....
Satya relates to our true essence. Being honest with ourselves about our lives, what we stand for, and who we are. This is obviously quite a searching question and can takes courage to even consider. Often, we can be 'busy', perhaps distracted, in our 'doing'- but if we don't take time to consider why we are undertaking certain actions, they can start to lose meaning.
In addition, the mind can distort the truth! How often have you misinterpreted what someone else says? This can happen particularly during written communication, or quickly written texts! The mind can start to wander off in all sorts of directions about what someone else meant.
Our yoga practice can help us stay present, focusing on the here and now, and quietening such thoughts, or 'citta vritti'.
Yoga is restraining the mind – stuff (Chitta) from taking various forms (Vrittis). —Swami Vivekananda
